National Trails Day
National Trails Day - June 1, 2019
Yachats Trails Committee, Siuslaw National Forest and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Collaborate in Celebrating National Trails Day on June 1st and June 15th.
National Trails Day®, originated by the American Hiking Society, is a nationwide celebration of America’s outstanding trail system that occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. It features a series of outdoor activities throughout the country designed to promote and celebrate the importance of trails. Its stated goal for the day is set the record for the most people participating in trail service in a single day.
On June 1, 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the City of Yachats Trails Committee and Siuslaw National Forest (SNF) will celebrate by partnering on a trail stewardship event: Clearing and preparing the Trail of the Restless Waters at Cape Perpetua for restoration. All local residents, visitors and trail enthusiasts are encouraged to join in.
Volunteers should carpool if possible. Those who wish to do so should meet at the north parking lot of the Yachats Commons at 8:30 a.m. From there drivers and their passengers will proceed to the lower parking lot of the Devil’s Churn (which is just north of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center (2400 Highway 101)). There participants will receive an orientation and sign required federal release forms before departing on foot for the Restless Waters trail at 8:45. Gloves and tools will be provided, or participants may bring their own, including those for cut and fill and raking. Participants should bring water bottles and layered clothes for changeable weather. Water and snacks will be provided. At SNF, parking is free on National Trails Day. For questions, contact Joanne Kittel at firstname.lastname@example.org or 541.961.8374.
Additional Celebration has been added this year.
In a second trails stewardship event on June 15th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. the Yachats Trails committee will team with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to extend the impact of National Trails Day. Volunteers will work on cleaning up and further preparing the new Amanda Bridge site for upcoming construction work. Following the work session there will be a potluck picnic at the Yachats Commons picnic shelter (441 Hwy101 N.) and all volunteers are invited to participate.
Due to limited parking at the Amanda Bridge work site, volunteers should gather in the parking lot at the north end of the Commons at 9:00 a.m. and carpool to the site. Volunteers who plan to attend the work session or the work session and potluck on June 15th should RSVP to Joanne Kittel (541.961.8374 or email@example.com) to determine carpooling needs.
